Psychology is managed by the Biology Department but staff from a
range of other departments bring their differing skills to the subject.
Thus the Scientific and Ethical nature of the subject is well served.
Sixth Form
Psychology is a subject offered to the Sixth Form at AS and A2 level. The AQA (A) specification is followed.
The school library has a wide range of general and specific reference books.
The
school's Intranet is an excellent resource with many interactive
exercises for student self study providing consolidation and assisting
revision.
The specification studied has a strong
scientific approach and has been designed to develop breadth of
knowledge, critical thinking skills and an appreciation of the
different aspects of the subject. It encourages students to take a
broad view of Psychology by covering the key perspectives, Cognitive
Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Physiological Psychology, Social
Psychology and Individual differences. There is no practical assessment
at AS, although experimental work forms part of the course. Three
theoretical modules are completed in the summer. Practical assessment
for A2 is by means of an investigative research topic, the remainder of
the assessment by theoretical examination.
Students will have a strong skill base and thus should be well prepared for any university course.
