The aim of Spanish lessons is to bring alive Spanish-speaking countries, making learning Spanish meaningful and fun. We endeavour to impart the excitement of language learning and instil the confidence to communicate in Spanish in an increasingly varied and complex range of situations. All lessons are conducted in Spanish as far as possible. We encourage girls to respond in the Target Language from the beginning of the course. We practise the four skills essential for mastering a modern foreign language: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Lower School

Year 7

We follow the Aventura Nueva course, Book 1. Aventura provides ample authentic listening and reading materials derived from a variety of sources. Girls develop speaking and writing skills steadily and confidently as their knowledge of spoken and written Spanish increases.

Year 8

In Year 8, girls continue with the Aventura Nueva course Book 2.

Year 9
If girls choose to continue Spanish in Year 9 they will begin the Vaya Nuevo course, Book 2. The new course will build upon and extend the work covered in Years 7 and 8, as well as providing girls with greater access to detailed grammar notes.

Upper School

Girls will continue with the Vaya Nuevo course in Years 10 and 11, where Book 3 will provide them with all the requirements for the GCSE course in a way that is both challenging and stimulating. Year 11 pupils will have regular contact with the Spanish Assistant. We offer the OCR syllabus.

Sixth Form - AS / A2 level

A Level Spanish builds on the development of the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Lessons are conducted in Spanish and cover a variety of topics such as education, the environment, current affairs and travel. In addition, girls read stories and other literary texts.

Trips and Social Events

Year 8, 9, 10, 11 and Sixth Form pupils are encouraged to participate in a trip to Spain, which includes a language course. Activities organised for Sixth Formers include work experience in Spain as well as study trips and social events within the Dame Alice/Bedford Modern School Spanish Society, Los Alamos.
