Science

Science is one of the three core subjects and as such forms an important part of the curriculum. Coverage of the National Curriculum is ensured by using the QCA schemes which can be modified and adapted to suit the needs of our pupils. Full coverage of the programme of study outlined in Key Stage 2 takes place over four years, in a series of 25 units. These include Life Processes, Living Things, Materials and their Properties and Physical Processes.

Each unit offers opportunities for Investigative and Experimental Science.

Teaching

In Years 3, 4 and 5 Science is taught by the Junior School teachers. This teaching takes place in the classroom and in our well-equipped Science Room. Good use is also made of our school grounds and the local environment. In Year 6 Science is taught by Senior School Science specialists in conjunction with the class teacher. Most of these lessons take place in the Science laboratories in the Senior School with a follow-up lesson in the Junior School. The scheme is divided in to three separate areas; Physics, Chemistry and Biology, each of which will be studied for 10 weeks.

Methods

A variety of teaching methods is used in order to develop a good understanding of the subject. These include class teaching, demonstrations, problem-solving and investigations. The girls are regularly involved in practical work.

Assessment

Assessment of the girls' knowledge and understanding takes place at the end of each unit. Assessment of investigative skills is ongoing.
