Morocco 2010

Easter Vacation 2010

In April this year a group of eleven girls from Years 11 to 13 travelled to Morocco to take part in a community project, and to trek in the Atlas mountains and by the coast.

Our expedition began in Marrakesh where we visited Djemaa el-Fna, a square and market place in the town's medina quarter. Here we sampled amazing food including couscous and tajine, alongside snake charmers, dancers, and a whole host of stallholders.

Our trip began in earnest the following day as we travelled to Aroumd, a village in the High Atlas mountains, to start work on the community project. We spent the first two days here helping to mend the potholes in the track that leads to the village. This was very hard work, but we were pleased with what achieved. We then spent a day in the local school where we used pictures to help teach the children English. We were delighted when the local girls started to decorate the picture of a hand with henna tattoo designs!

Whilst we were sad to leave the village, there was a real sense of adventure as we began our trek into the mountains. We crossed two mountain passes before setting up camp beside a very cold river. The walking was challenging, but we worked well together as a team and spurred each other on.

Our final challenge was a camel trek to the coast. To our surprise we all found this is a very uncomfortable mode of transport. The three-and-half hour outward journey was quite an endurance test and none of us relished the return journey the same afternoon! Never- the-less it was a great experience, lots of fun and quite a talking point.

One of the main aims of the trip was to help us to develop leadership skills, and we each had the chance to be responsible for the organisation of the team for one day. We have been amazed at how much confidence we have gained as a result of our expedition. We all found the whole experience life changing!
