After the U13’s recent National Schools Lacrosse win, it was the turn of the hockey girls last Friday (4th March).

BGS faced Surbiton High School in the final of the U13 National Independent School Hockey Cup (ISHC), a competition that attracts around 100 independent schools from across the country.

The girls earned their place in the final after a tight 3-1 victory over Godolphin and Latymer School in the semi-finals, and a similarly tight final looked on the cards.

BGS took the lead through Maddie Axford but were soon behind 4-1 to their south-west London opponents.

But BGS stormed back into the match and after moving 6-5 ahead, they didn’t look back to win 9-5, which included five goals from Axford, a Florence Miller hat-trick and a crucial goal from Emily Dunning.

Mr Mason-McLeod, Head of Hockey, said: “The girls were mightily impressive in the final. Surbiton were a strong side containing many club players but for the girls to come back like they did, and win by was such a margin, was very pleasing.”
