By Mrs Button (Year 6 Teacher)

As part of our How We Organise Ourselves unit, Year 6 embarked on an inquiry journey into different forms of government, seeking to understand how they function and the impact they have on society. From democracies to dictatorships, they investigated the diverse landscape of governance, exploring their structures, processes, and implications.

Their exploration began with a study of the government system in the UK, in particular comparing the function of the House of Commons with the House of Lords. This week they have been writing explanations to explore further the way in which laws are passed, gaining more depth into how these processes work.

The girls started out with the understanding that there are different forms of government, but through their inquiry - they have gained an understanding into the structure of many different forms of government, the positives and negatives about them and examples of where these forms of government are being practised. As they explored various forms of government, the girls began to make generalisations about their strengths and weaknesses. This led to discussions about the complexities of governance and the challenges of balancing competing interests and values within a society.

Jess (Year 6) said: “I was surprised to discover there were so many forms of government.”

Samika (Year 6) added: “I was shocked to find out that some forms of government can mean people have less freedoms.”
