On Sunday 24th March, Megan Barnicoat (Year 8) took part in the 2024 Great Britain Schools Biathlon Finals, held in Bath.

The event comprised a 100m swim and a 1,600m run. Unlike an aquathlon, the two disciplines are separated by around two hours, allowing athletes to prepare for each discipline separately. The times for each event are converted to points, and the faster you go, the more points you achieve. After both elements are completed, the points are added together, and the final placings are declared.

Megan started the day with the swim. Racing in the penultimate heat, Megan managed to post the fastest 100m swim of all the Year 8 competitors. She then moved on to the run: four laps of the running track. She ran very well and managed to achieve the 10th fastest run time of all 50 girls competing. After the points from the swim were added to her run points, Megan finished in 5th position nationally, which is a fantastic achievement.

Megan reflected on the event: “I was very happy to improve on the times and places I achieved last time I did the event. I am really looking forward to taking part in the event next year and to try and pick up some more points in the run!”
